Steps to Effectively Conduct a College Search
Looking for the right college can be an exciting yet overwhelming experience. With so many options out there, it's important to have a clear plan in place to effectively conduct your college search. By following these steps, you can streamline the process and ensure that you find the perfect fit for your educational journey.
Preparing for the SAT
Start Early
We get it—you'd love to have all the time in the world to prepare for a test, but high school life is busy, especially during your junior and senior years. With so many important events happening, it's crucial to figure out when you'll take the SAT. Aim to pick a date that's at least 2-3 months away, giving yourself enough time to prepare. Starting early helps you see how much you need to study each week and avoids last-minute cramming. Plus, students who start studying earlier tend to do better on the SAT and feel more confident going into the test.
Study with Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy
It's no shocker that studying is one of the best ways to prep for the SAT. We recommend using the official resources from the SAT creators themselves. The College Board teamed up with Khan Academy to offer a new and improved way to prepare for the SAT that's tailored just for you—and it's totally free. This resource, called Official SAT Practice, is the most comprehensive and official SAT study tool out there. Khan Academy creates a personalized study plan and guide based on your PSAT/NMSQT® or previous SAT scores, as well as your upcoming test date.
Take a Full Length SAT Test
One of the best ways to prep for the SAT is by taking a full-length practice test. Luckily, College Board offers several of these for free on Official SAT Practice. Doing a practice test with the same timing as the real thing gives you a great idea of how you'll score on test day. Our research shows that your score on an official, full-length practice test taken after some studying and close to your test date is a pretty accurate prediction of your actual SAT score. Plus, the results will help you identify areas you need to work on as the big day approaches. You can access these practice tests HERE on Official SAT Practice.
Know what to expect on test day
Knowing what to expect on test day is crucial. We understand that taking such an important test can be intimidating, so we highly recommend familiarizing yourself with what test day will be like. Besides taking a full-length practice test to get a feel for the format and timing, it's important to ensure you're on time and well-rested.
While studying is essential, don't cram the day or night before your SAT. Instead, use the evening before the test to unwind. Lay out your clothes, gather everything you need to bring, set an alarm for the next morning, and then just relax and get to bed early. Preparing yourself physically and emotionally the night before will give you more confidence and energy when you walk into the testing center the next morning.
